Latency & why it matters

Below is one of my favourite geeky maps of the world. It is of course the submarine cable map of the world. https://www.submarinecablemap.com/

The reason I like to call this map out is that whilst electrons and photons travel at a blindingly fast 299,792,458 metres per second, they do not travel instantaneously from point A to point B.

As a result latency can be a significant real-world issue for users of cloud services in many parts of the globe.

It takes a photon 134 ms to circumnavigate the globe, a little more if you add delays for repeaters and other technical equipment. At the risk of stating the obvious if you are requesting data on an intercontinental basis distance matters.

CloudHarmony’s CloudMatch Cloud Network Test allows you to easily fire off a comprehensive suite of network performance tests across a comprehensive list of Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) to determine downlink and latency from your location.

To get you started below is a screenshot of my results .

I invite you to do the same and share your results from your part of the world.

Best,

Chris
